For pool and spa owners it's a perfect time of year for maintenance.

The water in your pool or spa becomes harder over time. We'll change the water now and before filling up your pool or spa again give it a mini makeover with a chlorine wash or acid wash. When we're done with the wash and your pool or spa is filled with water once more we'll balance the water chemistry too.

By the way, if you're battling the dreaded black algae, the chlorine wash will get rid of it!

Another good pool chore we do at this time of year is to change the sand in your filter, or break down your DE filter and clean it out thoroughly.

Of course there are other maintenance items and repairs that are good to do now, such as resurfacing your pool and designing and landscaping your outdoor environment, or adding solar heating and getting in some more swim season!

Drop us an e-mail or call us at 520-240-1701 and we'll get you going in the right direction!

News "Splashes" - October 13, 2009

Solar Heating Means Never Say Winter!

I was sitting poolside the other day and basking in warmth, sunshine, and gratefulness for being in Tucson in October! But, I did gaze longingly at the pool, which is way too chilly for this desert lizard (lizards being cuter than rats).

There are a couple of options of course. Traditional methods have an investment up front and ongoing operating costs as well as maintenance costs.

There is another option and it's perfect for us here in Arizona - solar heating. Solar heating has lots of benefits including no operating costs and being better for the environment.

If you're thinking you want to keep this swim season thing in motion, give us a call and talk to us about solar heating for your pool!

News "Splashes"

Coming Soon.

Pool Store

One idea we are working on to offer our customers a more complete service is an online Pool Store.

We want to provide quality pool and spa products and supplies at the best prices possible.

If you have ideas of what you would like to see in our Pool Store drop us a line – we would appreciate your feedback.

Other Services

Along with regular cleaning services and repairs, Fagan Pool Service offers regular maintenance services.

Some other services we offer include:

sand changes

chlorine washes

acid washes

pool startups

vacation cleaning

hands-on pool care demonstrations

If you need a service you don’t see on our website, call us and talk to us about it!

About Us

Owner, Steve Fagan, has owned his own business for most of his working adult life. He began a pool service business in Phoenix in 1991 and when he moved to Tucson he found he did best at what he knows best: pool and spa service, maintenance, and repair.

Steve is always on the lookout for ways to improve. Himself. The business. Our office procedures. Even his work truck. He will help you improve too! He will challenge and encourage you to go after your dreams and to be the best you that you can be.

When he isn’t working or improving or serving at church he likes to ride his bicycle. For miles. For hours. Every chance he gets. But that isn’t often with everything else going on!

Beverly, Steve’s wife, has mostly worked in children’s education, which has provided a wealth of experience in many different areas. She now applies her skills to managing the office for the business. She also organizes stuff. “A place for everything and everything in its place.” That kind of organizing. “Everything” being a key word here.

When she isn’t working or serving at church, Beverly likes to read. She will read for as many miles and hours as Steve will ride his bicycle!

And between the two of them they’re improving and organizing every day…

Landscape/Hardscape Design

Seems like everybody is discovering the joys of moving it outdoors – the entertainment area, the kitchen, the living room are all heading poolside!

If you are finding just how refreshing and relaxing it is to take advantage and enjoy our beautiful desert environment, you may be thinking it’s time to take a little of the indoors outside yourself. But where to start?

Maybe you are imagining a new patio – flagstone? Brick? Stained, stamped, and/or stenciled concrete? How about a new barbeque set up or perhaps some benches around an outdoor fireplace? Yeah! Or how about some masonry or stucco walls here and there to define spaces or screen off the pool equipment. Some new landscaping would be good, with an irrigation system, and a boulder or two or three strategically placed. Enhance it all with a low voltage lighting system. You’re getting the idea now, aren’t you!

Jim of Jimstone Masonry will work with you to design the oasis of your dreams and then you’ll get to watch it take shape under his expert care. Contact us today and before you know it you’ll be enjoying your new outdoor living space with family and friends!

Pool Decking Service

The function of a pool deck used to be simply to provide a slip-resistant, heat-resistant area around the pool. Now, however, pool decks are also designed for entertainment, exercise, to extend a home’s living area into the outdoors, or create a mini-oasis or spa-like environment.

Concrete is a popular pool decking material because of its versatility. Concrete can be stamped or stenciled to look like brick, slate, flagstone, or a custom design. Concrete with an exposed aggregate finish can provide a slip-resistant finish with a dramatic flair. And adding color with chemical stains, integral color, or dry-shake hardeners can enhance any of these looks and add to the overall design of your home and surrounding landscaping or hardscaping.

If you are looking to resurface or repair your concrete pool decking, we have just the man for the job! Jim of Jimstone Masonry can repair or resurface your decking. And if you want something completely different he can help you out there too. Check out other ideas and options on our Landscape/Hardscape Designs page!

Pool Resurfacing

If you are considering resurfacing your pool we rub elbows with the experts! Pro Plastering will do the quality job you are looking for whether you are looking at traditional plaster finish, pebble tec, or a quartz surface.

Plaster is still the most common pool surface and is the least expensive finish you can buy. Plaster is more porous and so is more likely to stain or produce algae and it can require more chemicals to keep the water chemistry balanced. It is usually made with white cement mixed with limestone or marble sand and can last for seven to ten years if you take proper care of it.

Pebble tec is an alternative to traditional plaster. Small river stones are mixed with cement and dyed in your choice of numerous colors. While some people find the original pebble tec somewhat rough, there are now smoother finishes to choose from. Pebble tec is more expensive than plaster but should last twelve to twenty years with proper care.

Quartz finishes are plaster mixed with quartz and can also be colored. More expensive than plaster but less than pebble tec, quartz surfaces are very hard and durable, less porous and therefore more stain resistant, and should last ten to fifteen years when taken care of properly.

Got questions? Contact us by e-mail or call 520-240-1701 and we’ll be happy to point you in the right direction to update your pool and make it look new again!

Tile Cleaning

There are different ways to get rid of the hard water deposits on your pool and spa tile. Most of us are familiar with one – the good ol’ pumice stone and elbow grease combination! The problem with that is it takes so long that by the time you are at the end of the project it’s time to start at the beginning again! And let’s face it, by after about the third tile, we’re ready for a break. Like until next year maybe!

Another method is to replace the unsightly tile. Time consuming. Expensive. Messy.

There are some other options available though.

Glass bead cleaning uses, you guessed it, glass beads made from lead-free, soda lime-type glass. The glass beads are sprayed on the tile at a low air pressure, destroying the calcium buildup. The glass beads then settle to the bottom of the pool, to be picked up by the cleaning skimmer or vacuumed out after the procedure is complete. While many companies offer this type of tile cleaning, not everyone agrees it is the best way.

Pool Pro’s specializes in tile cleaning. They do not use glass beads. Using state-of-the-art equipment, Pool Pro’s beautifies your tile using an environmentally safe and 100% biodegradable process called soda blasting. Soda blasting removes scaling and other buildup from your tile without damaging the glaze or sending the cleaning media through your equipment. After Pool Pro’s has finished not only will your tile look like new again but they will have cleaned your pool and balanced the water chemistry so all that’s left to do is jump in and enjoy!

Fagan Center

When he isn’t working or sleeping, Steve is involved in Adult Discipleship Ministries at Calvary Chapel Tucson. “Life is tough and if we aren’t going through it with Jesus, it’s even tougher. He began a pool service business in Phoenix and after selling it and moving to Tucson he returned to what he knows best: pool and spa service, repair, and maintenance.

Steve is a member of IPSSA, the Independent Pool and Spa Service Association. In addition to passing the required water chemistry tests and attending monthly training and informational meetings, Steve is always on the lookout for ways to improve the business, whether with the most current methods and technology for pool and spa service, more efficient ways to streamline business procedures, or just practical matters regarding inventory and ordering of pool and spa products. “If it ain’t broke, see if we can make it work better!”

Beverly Fagan, Office
Beverly handles most of the office duties for the business. She has a love-hate relationship with computers (you thought she was going to say with Steve?! No way, it’s love, love, love through and through!) and is grateful that the business can be managed with computer technology.

Jeff Lockwood, Pool Service Technician
Jeff worked in the pool and spa product industry for many years. He came to the point where he was ready to learn the service side of pool and spa maintenance and decided to subcontract with Fagan Pool Service to learn more of this aspect of the industry. Jeff plans to eventually build his own pool and spa service business.

Contact Fagan Pool Service

Payments

1. (In some cases counter-clockwise flow is proper).

The return just upstream from the skimmer should be adjusted to direct a surface current that enables floating debris to be swallowed up by the skimmer current.

Pump

The pump and motor pull water from the main drain and the skimmer, then push the water through the filter, the heater, and the chlorinator, then back to the pool wall returns.

If allowed to run dry, the pump and adjacent piping can be damaged.

The pump basket collects leaves, debris, etc. and prevents them from entering the pump and filter:
clean the pump basket weekly, or after a wind storm;
before removing lid to strainer basket, be sure to turn motor to pump OFF;
after pump basket lid is re-secured, turn pump on.
Use a silicone based lube on the O-ring in the lid to assure a better seal and easier removal.

Sometimes debris is forced through the pump basket and can lodge in the pump's impeller, causing the circulation system to be ineffective. If this occurs, it will require disassembly and cleaning.

Time Clock

The time clock turns the pump motor on and off at adjustable pre-determined times.

For best results, time clock should run pump eight to twelve hours during the swimming season, and six to eight hours in winter.

It is best to set time clock to cycle on and off twice in a 24 hour period to better balance circulation, filtration and sanitizer disbursement.

One cycle should be run during the day for optimal efficiency.

Chlorine Generator
(Saltwater Pool)

If you have a "saltwater pool" your pool's chlorinator takes salt (sodium chloride) that has been measured into your pool and converts it into chlorine.

This instantly starts to destroy bacteria, viruses, and algae, and then reverts back to dissolved salt.

This cycle continues as more new chlorine is produced from the salt water in the electrolysis cell, sanitizes the pool, and changes into dissolved salt once again.

The dissolved salts are converted to chlorine only when the filter pump is running.

In hard water situations like we have in Arizona, or continuous high pH conditions, it may be necessary to manually clean the electrodes to remove scale build-up.

Refer to your owners manual for cleaning instructions.

(One recommendation is a solution of one part muriatic acid to ten parts of water, and soak the chlorinator electrodes for five minutes to remove calcium residue. Repeat as necessary.)

Deck (DEK) Chlorinator

If your pool has a deck chlorinator, chlorine tablets are added in the canister and the valve is adjusted at the equipment to regulate the flow of water to the chlorinator.

The greater the flow, the faster the chlorine tabs are dissolved and the more chlorine flows into the pool.

The valve should not be open so much that water overflows onto the deck. During the summer when extreme temperatures heat up the deck, the water in the chlorinator can "percolate," causing high concentrations of chlorine to build up. This can burn the plaster at the opening into the pool.

It is recommended that the time clock be adjusted so some one filter time is scheduled during the heat of the day to prevent this from happening.

Run the filter pump when you remove the lid to access the DEK Chlorinator. High levels of chlorine gas may form and when the lid is removed you may be in danger of inhaling them.

Filter

Your pool filter is designed to mechanically clean your pool water by trapping tiny particles inside.

The cleaner the water, the less sanitizer and chemical adjustments will be required.

The pressure gauge located on top of the filter tells you the condition of your filter and circulating system. In normal operation, check and note the gauge reading. When the gauge rises 8 pounds above this starting pressure, it is time to clean the filter. If the gauge falls below the starting pressure, check the skimmer and pump basket for debris. Sometimes debris is forced through he pump basket and can lodge in the pump's impeller which will require disassembly and cleaning.

Always follow manufacturer's and dealer instructions for operation and maintenance foro ther pool equipment and accessories.

Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filters work on the clarification process."

They utilize the debris they collect as an aid to improve filtration.

As a result, cleaning too often does not allow the filter to work at optimum filtration efficiency, while not cleaning often enough will shorten the life of a cartridge element. So here's a tip:

when you replace the element with a new one, note the start-up pressure on the tank gauge;

this reading is the system's total pressure in "pounds per square inch" or psig (gauge);

mark this point with a drop of fingernail polish or a grease pen;

then add eight pounds to the reading and place another dot;

you now have the normal operating pressure for your cartridge in psid (differential);

allow the filter to operate between these two points and clean whenever the gauge reaches the higher pressure mark.

Cartridge Cleaning Instructions

When should a cartridge element be cleaned?

For swimming pools, clean the cartridge when filter canister pressure reaches 8 PSI above the initial system or new cartridge starting pressure.

What is the procedure to clean my cartridge?

Remove the cartridge from the filter housing following the manufacturer's instructions.

Use a garden hose with a straight flow nozzle to wash down the filter element. Work from the top down, holding the nozzle at a 45 degree angle, and wash all the pleats thoroughly.

Rinse until all dirt and debris is gone.

To remove suntan lotions, and other oils from the cartridge filter, soak the element for at least one hour in (1) a commercial filter cleaner; or (2) one cup trisodium phosphate (TSP) to five gallons water; or (3) one cup dishwasher detergent to five gallons of water.

Rinse the cartridge again to remove oils and cleaning solution.

What if the pressure gauge reading does not return to the original "clean" psi reading after the cartridges have been cleaned?

It may be necessary to acid wash the filter elements to remove buildup that is reducing water. (Read "Acid Washing Your Cartridge Filter Element" below before proceeding).

ACID WASHING FILTER ELEMENTS

If the filter has a coating of algae, calcium carbonate (same as buildup on waterline tile), iron, or other minerals, soak the cartridge in a solution of one part muriatic acid to twenty parts water until all bubbling stops.

Rinse the cartridge clean and reassemble housing.

WARNING: Failure to remove all oils and cleaning solution before acid soaking will result in a permanent restriction of water flow and cause premature cartridge failure.

WARINNG: Wear rubber gloves and safety glasses when using acid and chlorine. Do not add water to acid. Do not mix chlorine and acid.

Acid Washing Your Cartridge Filter Element

Acid washing is perhaps the biggest single factor leading to premature cartridge failure. As a rule of thumb, acid wash only when required, if at all, and never without thoroughly cleaning the element with a cartridge degreaser first.

Here is a simple test to determine if acid washing is required:

thoroughly clean the cartridge with a degreasing agent;

flush the cartridge with a garden hose to remove all traces of soap, etc.;

apply several drops of acid directly to a small area of the filter media;

if bubbling occurs, this indicates a build up of calcium or minerals;

continue with a mild acid soak;

if no bubbling is observed, your cartridge probably does not require acid washing.

NOTE: Most manufacturers do not recommend the use of diatomaceous earth (DE) with cartridge filters. DE particles will become trapped in the body of the cartridge and shorten cartridge life. If desired, a cellulose fiber (synthetic DE) can be used in moderation.

POOL & SPA VALVE INSTRUCTIONS

Normal Swimming Pool & Spa Valve Settings with No Heating

Filter Pump Suction from Pool - The 3-Way Jandy valve next to the pump basket adjusts the suction from the pool and spa.

In normal operation, close the spa suction; at the same time this opens the pool suction so that water is pulled only from the pool.

To ensure that the vacuum operates properly and vacuums the floor and the walls, adjust the vacuum and skimmer Jandy valve.

To do this, open the vacuum suction line and partially close the skimmer and main drain until the automatic vacuum is working at the desired speed.

Skimmer/drain should not be closed so much that you can hear the pump start to strain because it is not getting enough water to operate properly.

Take a look into the deck skimmer and make sure there is enough flow to pull floating leaves and debris into the skimmer basket.

Filter Pump Returns to Pool -

Now open the pool return valve all the way and open the spa return valve slightly (just enough to create a sheet of water falling over the spillway).

It is very important to have water going to the spa in normal operation so the spa water is filtered and chlorinated.

If there is a water feature on this pump, adjust the jandy valve that regulates its flow for acceptable water feature performance.

To Heat and Filter the Spa Only

Turn off the Filter pump motor.

Open the Spa suction valve (this closes the pool suction).

Now you are pulling water only from the spa.

Next, open the spa return valve (this closes the pool return).

Now the valving is set to only pull water from the spa and return it to the spa.

You now can turn of the filter pump motor, and turn on the heater.

Now the spa and heater will run to the preset temperature setting until you reverse the valving to the original position.

You should set the spa temperature thermostat to the desired level.

You are now only filtering and heating the spa.

Reverse these steps to return to normal operation.

Remember, if you don't reverse these valve settings, your pool water will not be chlorinated nor filtered.

To Heat the Pool and Spa

From the normal valve positions, simply turn the heater on and set thermostate to the desired levels.

Nighttime temperatures really pull the heat out of the pool water, so it is adviseable to put on a floating solar blanket.

A Few Notes About Your Spa

Heater Bypass Valve -

Always adjust this valve so half the water is directed back to the pool and spa returns, and half through the heater.

4-Way Spa-side Switch -

Push once turns on the Therapy Pump.

Push Twice it turns on the blower.

Push a third time and it turns off the Therapy Pump.

Push a fourth time and it turns off the blower.

Therapy Air Blower - When turned on it blows air into the Therapy line to maximize the jet action.

ACRYLIC DECK MAINTENANCE

By following these easy instructions you will enjoy the beauty and pleasure of your new acrylic deck for many years to come.

Please Do Not:

walk on or get water on your concrete deck for 48 hours;

place any furniture on it for 7 days;

allow any landscape materials, dirt, debris, and the tracking of mud on the new deck.

Occasionally hose off acrylic deck with a high-pressure nozzle to prevent dirt and stains from being ground into deck.

Remove stubborn stains by using a stiff brush and a mild detergent, scrub well and hose off.

Other stains can be removed as follows:

Calcium Deposits - that appear as whitish stains in areas where water puddles, use "Limeaway," (available at any grocery store), scrubbing thoroughly, allowing to sit for 10 minutes, then rinsing completely to remove residue.

Coffee, Soda, etc. - Use a mild detergent, some water and a stiff brush to get down into the texture.

Grease and Oil - Use "Gumout," (available at any grocery store)

Rust Stains - Use "Wink," a rust remover, or navel jelly (available at any grocery or hardware store).

Algae Stains - Use a mixture of 70 parts water to 30 parts of liquid pool chlorine. Allow mixture to set 10 to 20 minutes then hose off completely. Use with care, as using too much will damage the sealer

Pool and Spa Service Packages
Our Rates, spelled out, clear and easy to understand:
The following package rates are estimates. We do our best to guarantee your pets’ safety while servicing your pool but we cannot be responsible for pets that escape during our service call. As well, we will not service your pool if "guarded" by an unfriendly dog left unrestrained. We ask for your understanding and cooperation regarding household pets.

SERVICE DAYS

Weekly service is for a minimum of 48 cleaning days per year. If your service day falls on a holiday we will make every attempt to work it into another service day that same week; however, we may not always be able to. Some weather conditions or vehicle or equipment circumstances beyond our control may also cause a missed service day periodically throughout the year.

Because summer is a high-maintenance time, we do not take summer breaks. It is important to continue quality pool service and maintenance over the winter, but because it is a less critical season, we take our “two weeks” at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

POOL OWNER RESPONSIBILITIES

During summer months we need your filter system to run at least 8 hours each day of the week. All the chemicals in the world don't help stagnant water stay clear. Automatic water fill systems are your responsibility NOT Fagan Pool Service. If they malfunction your water bill is not the responsibility of Fagan Pool Service.

CHEMICALS

If your service includes chemicals, these are standard chemicals used weekly – acid, chlorine tabs, soda ash, and salt – not additional chemical services such as algae treatments and shocking pools.

Don’t see the services you need here? Email us, or call 520-240-1701 for a free, no obligation quote.
